People tracing is a much used service offered by London and Essex Genealogy and is perhaps one of the most satisfying and fulfilling.
For those who seek to use such a service there is both good news and bad news; the good news is that the success rate is fairly reasonable - about 50% and on some occasions fairly quick*. The bad news is that the research costs can range from under £100 to several thousand pounds and can take months or years even depending on how much the client really needs to find the individual; they may demand that every possible source is consulted which results in a lengthy and costly duration.
Adopted children trying to contact their original parents should always seek counselling by a professional before they contact me - I will not proceed with any research unless I can be assured this has been done.
It is important for all customer's to be informed that the lengthy duration of looking for an individual is often because a researcher is at the mercy of other individuals, i.e. waiting for government departments to produce documents, waiting for replies to letters, the return of phonecalls etc.
Also customers should bear in mind that research will not get far if they do not have a name to begin with; information that is too vague or sparse is unlikely to yield results either. Researcher's do not have access to records that will produce a miracle result, but in fact only have access to the same type of records as anyone else; what a customer is ultimately paying for is the researcher's expertise in using these records to achieve the final result.
